Ofsted Shadowing Programme

The Ofsted Shadowing Programme (formerly the School Inspection Shadowing Programme) is for black and Asian senior teachers who are considering applying for senior leadership and headship positions.
The programme involves shadowing Ofsted inspection teams on two school inspections. The aim is to enhance participant's skills and knowledge when applying for promotion by providing valuable new insights into school performance and effectiveness.
Key facts
- This programme has been developed in response to school workforce data, which indicates that only around 2.4 per cent of headteachers are from a non-white background and, in particular, black and Asian headteachers are significantly under-represented.
- The programme is offered by Ofsted and the National College, working with the Black Leadership Initiative (BLI).
- Participants attend two school inspections, observing the inspection team and receiving mentoring from a host inspector (HMI).
- A tailored career development and mentoring scheme is also available to continue support after the inspections.
- The programme is fully funded.

Duration
Shadowing takes place throughout the year and is followed by ongoing career development support.
Delivery method
