North East

Michelle Charlton

Michelle is the schools' business director for the Fishburn cluster of primary schools in Fishburn, County Durham, where she is working with the headteachers to refine the strategic role of a business manager across a group of schools. She is part of the leadership team and manages the business aspects of each school budget. Before moving into education, she trained in accountancy and worked in the public and private sector in roles that covered finance, payroll and customer services.

Michelle is currently working towards the SBD and a BA (Hons) in School Business Management, having completed CSBM, DSBM and ADSBM.

North West

Dawn Boyes

Dawn is school business manager at Cockermouth School, Cumbria. She has seen her career develop from administrator at a school in Sutton Coldfield to senior school leader, providing headteachers with strategic support. She has experience of working in a selective school, a large inner city school and rural secondary, as well as working and supporting SBMs in primary schools. In 2009 Dawn lead one of the development projects and still works closely with rural primary schools.

Dawn took part in the pilot of DSBM in 2003 and completed the ADSBM in 2009. She also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies looking at the impact that school premises have on the well-being of pupils. She was presented with a distinction at the NBA Support Staff Awards for her work with Sandwell authority on financial management, workforce development and networking school business managers.

In 2011 Dawn completed the CIPFA Finance Reporting for Academies course.

Yorkshire and the Humber

Morag Somerville

Morag is the federation business manager at Fox Hill and Monteney Primary Schools in Sheffield. Morag has also supported four other primary schools within the Yewlands family of schools as part of a demonstration project for school business management.

She is a member of the federation leadership team and her responsibilities include strategic planning, finance, human resources, health and safety, and overseeing the children’s centre. Morag has completed CSBM, DSBM and ADSBM. She also helps to facilitate workshops at the National College on the role of school business mangers.

East of England

David Allen

David was first appointed school manager at Litcham High School and is now business manager to a collection of seven schools, including a cross-phase federation. He is well versed in the challenges facing small rural schools with limited resources and increased pressures.

David is passionate about developing the voice of SBMs, for whom he organised a local conference in 2010. His interests include coaching for performance and bringing the links between business and education closer.

East Midlands

Marsha Brown

Marsha is the school business manager at St. Monica’s Catholic School in Milton Keynes, where she is a member of the leadership team. Her responsibilities include strategic planning for finance, human resources, premises and administration. Currently she works as a partnership SBM (for one day per week) across seven schools in Milton Keynes, where she works with headteachers to increase the SBM penetration and maximise the benefits of the SBM role.

Marsha has completed the CSBM, DSBM and ADSBM and is currently enrolled on the SBD programme, she also has a BA Hons in Business Administration.

West Midlands

Husham Khan

Husham is a strategic business manager at a partnership school in the Midlands, providing operational support and leadership advice to senior leadership teams, and is a writer and published author in school financial management. Prior to this Husham worked in two secondary schools as a business manager, for Birmingham City Council as a finance officer, and has experience working in five different local authorities. In 2003 he created and developed the Budget Management Training Programme, which is used to train headteachers and business managers in the Midlands. He qualified at the University Central of England Business School with a BA (Hons) in Business in 1998 before completing the CSBM and DSBM programmes in 2006. He is an international speaker on education financial management and has developed, and currently delivers, training for local leaders of education and national leaders of education through our programmes. He has recently worked with the Department for Education on the development of the SFVS framework and is a specialist leader of education.

South West

Russell Dalton

Russell is the school business manager at Pershore High School in Worcestershire. He has been in this role for over five years, in which time he has successfully taken the catering and cleaning ‘in house’, project managed four major builds as well as provided strategic business leadership to the school. He also provides business management support to a local primary school.

Russell left the Army in 2005 after 23 years service. He moved straight into his current role and has since completed CSBM, DSBM and is currently working towards ADSBM. He chairs the Worcestershire Association of School Business Management and sits on the National Association of School Business Management’s advisory council.

South East

Marian Dunning

Marian is a school business director at a large Catholic comprehensive school in Kent. She has worked in both primary and secondary education for the past 16 years. She has spent the past five years involved in the Building Schools for the Future programme at her school, which was built on the human scale education design of a 'schools within schools' model. She is a member of the school's headship team and works at a strategic level within the school.

She has completed the CSBM, DSBM, ADSBM and is currently on the second SBD pilot programme.

London

Jo Watts

Jo is the school business manager at a large primary school in south west London.

She has worked in education for more than 20 years, in secondary schools, an Education Action Zone and a local authority 14-19 team.

When she started her current job three years ago, the school was £100k in deficit – the balance is now in credit. As well as being responsible for all non-teaching and learning aspects Jo has successfully managed the children's centre new build project and has overall supervision of the centre. Jo has completed DSBM and the BA (Hons) in School Business Management.

Kerry Brimfield

Kerry leads one of the National College’s demonstration projects aimed at highlighting the role of the school business director. She provides strategic business leadership to a sports college and seven primary schools in the South West. Before entering the education sector Kerry ran her own business for 14 years. In 2008 Kerry won the Sue Simcock Award, a special achievement award for school business managers.

Kerry works with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) on its research functions and in the Implementation Review Unit. This is a group of school practitioners whose remit is to challenge and support government departments on how best to implement policies and initiatives in schools. She has completed CSBM, DSBM and ADSBM, and is undertaking an MSc in Education Business Management and a PhD in new approaches to school leadership.
