School business management development

The role of school business manager (SBM) is now widely recognised as being an integral part of helping schools make better use of their resources and facilities, enabling headteachers and other leaders to focus on leading teaching and learning.

Professional development

SBM training opportunities have been designed by the National College and the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to provide participants with the essential skills and competencies that will enable them to operate effectively within a school business management role. There are now four programmes:

Future opportunities

Primary clusters

The Department for Education has released funds and commissioned the College to introduce SBM primary partnerships. These partnerships will have the primary aim of increasing access to skilled SBMs within the primary sector. Find out more.

Finance and accounting skills training

We are developing an online learning package, supported potentially by a workshop, to provide SBMs with key accountancy skills.

Regional school business manager advocates

We have appointed SBM advocates to operate within the nine government regions. Their remit is to raise awareness of the SBM profession, promote avenues for career progression and demonstrate how the role can improve school effectiveness.

School business management partnership advisers

We have commissioned a number of advisers to provide operational advice on the setting up and sustainability of school business management partnership arrangements for clusters of schools.

The last conference took place in June 2009. Find out what happened and watch a short video of the highlights.

Graduation ceremonies

As a result of the recent reductions that have been made to all public sector budgets, we will no longer be able to provide graduation ceremonies for the SBM programme. Further information about this announcement can be found on the SBM graduation page.

National Association of School Business Management (NASBM) events

Find out about the NASBM national conference 2010, which will take place on 18-19 November at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton and about their programme of regional conferences.

The National College is the proud sponsor of the School Business Manager of the Year and the Sue Simcock Award (a special achievement award for a school business manager) at the NASBM National Awards for Support Staff 2010. Find out more about award categories and nominating.
