Website features
The following are new features of the National College website. We have many more coming soon, but here are some of the new tools you can use to get the most of the new website.
Membership
Included in the benefits of membership are some new features of the website.
My college
This new page is personalised for members of the college and contains a selection of widgets, which act like windows into other areas of the site.
Some of these widgets are personalised, based on your information, such as the my programmes widget, while others offer more generic content. We’ll be adding more widgets over the coming months.
My account settings
The My account settings page gives you the ability to change your personal details, access your learning record, and lets you sign up for the members e-newsletter.
Search
You can search the website from the top of all web pages. You can narrow your results down by choosing a specific area from the dropdown next to the search box or by clicking on one of the related subjects displayed on the right side of the page.
You can also access advanced search, which gives you fine control over your searches of events, publications, programmes and resources. You can narrow results down by type, role, location and context.
Related content
As you are browsing the site, information and resources related to the content of the page you are viewing are available in a selection of tabs at the bottom of the page. This feature uses associations between the content on the site to provide further reading and in-depth information.
Downloading, ordering and bookmarking
My downloads
As you browse the website, you can collect web pages and downloadable files together by clicking on the my downloads button at the right of the page. You can then download them all at the same time in a single, compressed file.
The compressed file, which is also known as a zipped file, is like a packed suitcase that saves space and makes files faster to download, especially over slow connections. Most computers contain software that understands compressed files, but if your computer does not, software to decompress files is freely available online.
Ordering publications
Some National College publications can be ordered as a print version. Where this is available, you will see a add to basket link or an order button. Following either of these will add the publication to your shopping basket.
My bookmarks
If you are signed in you can bookmark specific pages on the website by using the ‘Bookmark this page’ link in the tools menu. The bookmark will then be available in a widget on your My College page or by following the My bookmarks link below the tools menu.
Sharing Content
Email a friend
This feature allows you to recommend a page to a friend by using the Email a friend button in the tool menu to send them an email containing a link to the current page.
Bookmark with…
This feature allows you to use a range of websites to store, tag and share links across the web with friends and people with similar interests. You can also access your links from any computer you happen to be using.
You may already have accounts on some of these sites, but if not these sites you will need to create an account to use them.
News feeds
A selection of news feeds are available for different parts of the site. These provide automatic updates on new content.
Printing pages
If you prefer to share information in paper form, a print version of each page is available. This produces a view of the page that focuses on the content and removes some of the website navigation, which is not needed when reading offline.
